CPUDefinition
CPU stands for central processing unit. The CPU is an internal component of the computer and essentially the "brains of the computer where most calculations take place" (http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/C/CPU.html). It is essential for the computer to work, "without [it], you wouldn't be able to play games, type research papers, or surf the internet" (http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-a-cpu.htm). Function There are four basic functions of a CPU to process instructions: 1. Fetch - retrieving instructions from memory 2. Decode - programs that are being executed are translated to Assembly instructions which are then decoded into binary instructions that the CPU can understand 3. Execute - one of three things can been done in this step, the arithmetic logic unit (ALU) can be used to execute calculations, data can be moved from one memory location to another, or if needed the CPU can jump to different addresses 4. Store - output data is written into memory Description and concrete example of how it affects the end user A CPU is very useful for school or personal use as it is essential for the computer to run and be used. It allows you to search websites, open applications and use email, etc. The CPU will make it possible for you to open assignments you have been given, type up those assignments in word, browse the web for information on your assignments, and ask questions and hand in assignments through email. Recommendations Most likely you will be using your computer for word processing, internet browsing, and simple databases. For this type of use I would recommend a Multi Core processor for optimal performance, such as a EX400 or a 64x2 4200. Both of these are reasonably priced. |
