RAMDefinition
RAM stands for random access memory and is the most common type of memory used in computers. "[It] is made up of small memory chips that form a memory module" (http://www.techterms.com/definition/ram) and there are two types of RAM. These are DRAM (Dynamic RAM) which is more common and needs to constantly be refreshed and SRAM (Static RAM) which is faster and does not need to be refreshed, but is more expensive. Function The function of RAM is to temporarily store data and programs while your computer is on. It is similiar to a human's short term memory as it only stores information that is being used at the time, while the system is on. Description and concrete example of how it affects the end user RAM is needed in order to do things on your computer and have different programs and documents open. The more RAM a user has, the more programs and documents the computer can have open without slowing down. RAM will make it possible for you to have multiple things open at once, such as internet browsers, assignments, word documents, and have music playing. Recommendations Most likely as a student you will be a power user. Using your computer for browsing the internet, email, word processing and intensive multitasking. For this I would recommend getting 4GB - 8GB of RAM. |
